Lipstick in Politics

Recently we've been hearing a lot about lipstick on the political scene, and I thought it would be fun to put up all the videos I could find of politicians referring to lipstick in they're speeches. Here's what I found:

listed in chronological order

Recently, because of this statement by Sen. Obama, A lot of people think (given the fact that Sarah Palin does wear lipstick) he was calling her a pig.

Personally, I think that's ridiculous. It's a common phrase, it's funny, and it illustrates the point Obama is trying to get across.

What do you think?

Very interesting, Graydon, I did not know that Dick Cheney used that phrase even before Obama did.

I was listening to Michael Medved today talking about this controversy, and he mentioned that this controversy is probably a pretty strategic move.

John McCain's campaign from the start knew that if they could keep the spotlight on Barack Obama, they would win the election. However, if they let Barack put the spotlight and focus of the election on George Bush, they would loose.

The McCain campaign really doesn't think that they are actually going to make people believe that Obama called Palin a pig, what they're doing is making Obama take his time defending himself from his gaffs and not have the time to really do more uncomfortable things, like pinning John McCain to George Bush.

So, you're saying that Obama wasn't calling Palin a pig intentionally, but the McCain campaign has blown this thing up to keep Obama on the defensive.

If this is the case you and I are on the same page here, because, like I said, it's a common phrase, it's funny, and it illustrates the point.

Excellent comment Sam! Thanks for the thought!

P.S. I found out about Dick Cheney's quote from radio talk show host Michael Savage.

Great Post! I have been listening to talk radio just about 12 hours a day and yesterday this was addressed by everyone! The first time I heard the Obama quote, I thought he was making a reference to Mrs. Palin--I did not realize it was so common. Here is a video of McCain himself using this quote http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMHlIfOTS1c. Many women were calling in yesterday, very upset because they felt that since they wear lipstick, Obama was calling all women pigs. Words can be twisted in many ways. However, watching the video I feel it was just another of his many blunders he steps into. Although, if it was not a reference to Palin, Obama should apologize and clarify. This has become a really exciting election. You kind of wonder what is going to happen next!!!

Thanks, Sarah!

My opinion on the matter is that it would be great if Obama would apologize and clarify as you say, but it's only going to hurt him. This has been shown time and time again; if you can get Obama on the defensive, he will bury himself. If he's on the offense, look out.

The more he reacts to McCain and Palin, the better it is for republicans everywhere.

Thanks for the comment!
